Privacy Policy

Introduction

The Precedent AI Inc. (“The Precedent,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard personal information when you use our AI-powered legal update platform. Our services are primarily intended for legal professionals (e.g. lawyers) in the United States, and we process personal information in the U.S. By using The Precedent, you agree to the data practices described in this Policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of our services.

Information We Collect

We collect both information you provide directly and information collected automatically when you use our services:

Account Information

When you register an account, we ask for personal details such as your name, email address (work email if provided), and a password. We may also collect your company or organization name and any information you choose to share about your role or practice. This information is used to create and manage your user account, identify you on the platform, and communicate with you (for example, sending login confirmations or support responses).

Company Details

If you use The Precedent on behalf of a company or to track a specific organization’s legal obligations, we collect information about that company. This includes details you provide (e.g. company name, industry, areas of interest) and publicly available information we gather from online sources about the company’s products, services, or regulatory profile. We use this company-related data to profile relevant legal updates and tailor the insights our AI provides to you and your organization.

User Content

We collect any information you voluntarily input into our platform, such as search queries, chat queries, notes, or documents you provide while using our services. This information will be used to perform the services (for example, to generate a legal summary or answer a question) and to improve our AI models.

Note: Communications between you and The Precedent are not protected by attorney–client privilege, as The Precedent is not a law firm. Do not submit confidential client information to the platform.

Usage Data (Automatic Collection)

Like most online services, The Precedent automatically collects certain data about your use of the platform. This may include technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, and device identifiers. We also log usage information like the pages or features you access, the dates/times of access, search queries entered, and other interaction data. This Usage Data helps us understand how the service is performing, track platform stability, and identify areas for improvement.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar tracking technologies (like web beacons and local storage) to enhance your experience. Cookies are small text files placed on your device that remember your preferences and recognize you on return visits. For example, cookies allow us to keep you logged in to your account, retain your settings, and measure usage of various features. We may also use cookies (and first-party analytics tools) to collect aggregate data about site traffic and interaction (e.g. which pages are most visited) so we can improve our services. You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings; however, if you choose to block cookies, some features of The Precedent site may not function properly.

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information for various purposes consistent with operating an AI-driven legal research and update service. Specifically, we may use your information to:

Provide Core Services

Deliver the functionality of The Precedent platform, including using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze legal and regulatory information and generate content for you. For example, we use your data and inputs to create legal summaries, generate reports, engage in chat conversations about rules and regulations, and deliver updates tracking changes in laws that are relevant to you or your organization. Our AI algorithms process your information and publicly sourced legal data to provide these tailored insights and outputs.

Personalize and Improve the Platform

We use your information (including profile and company data, and Usage Data) to personalize your experience and improve our services. This includes suggesting relevant legal topics, tailoring the regulatory updates you see, and refining our AI models and features. By analyzing how users interact with The Precedent, we can identify usage trends, fix technical issues, and develop new tools or content that better serve our users.

Account Administration and Communication

We process your contact information to manage your account and communicate with you about the service. This includes sending necessary emails such as registration confirmations, password reset instructions, account alerts, and updates about new features or changes to our terms/policies. We may also respond to your inquiries or support requests using your contact details.
(Note: You cannot opt out of certain fundamental communications, like those for password resets or important account notices, as they are necessary for service administration.)

Legal and Regulatory Updates

As part of our service, we may use your provided information (like your practice area or company profile) to send you targeted notifications or email updates about significant changes in laws and regulations. These communications are meant to keep you informed of legal developments relevant to your interests or industry. You can customize some of these notification preferences in your account settings or by contacting us.

Security and Fraud Prevention

We use personal and usage data to protect the integrity of our platform, users, and data. For example, we may use IP addresses and log data to detect suspicious or unauthorized activities (such as potential fraud, bot abuse, or hacking attempts) and take steps to prevent harm. Information may be used to verify user identities, enforce our Terms of Service, and generally ensure the security of The Precedent’s operations.

Legal Compliance

We will use or disclose your information if necessary to comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or enforceable governmental requests. For instance, we may process personal data to fulfill reporting obligations or respond to a court order or subpoena. We also use data as needed to exercise or defend legal claims.

Optional Marketing (With Consent)

We do not share your data for marketing by third parties, but with your permission we may use your email to send you The Precedent newsletters, legal tech updates, or promotions about new features. This is entirely opt-in. If you choose to join our mailing list, you can later unsubscribe at any time by using the “unsubscribe” link in emails or adjusting your account preferences. (Opting out of marketing emails will not affect service-related communications as noted above.)

How We Share or Disclose Information

We understand your personal information is important, so we do not sell or rent your data to third parties for their own marketing or advertising purposes. We only share personal information in a few limited situations, described below, and always with appropriate safeguards:

Service Providers

We employ trusted third-party companies or contractors to perform certain business-related functions on our behalf. Examples include cloud hosting providers (for data storage and servers), email delivery services (to send account or notification emails), analytics services, or (if applicable) payment processors. These service providers are given access only to the personal information necessary for them to do their specific tasks for us, and they are contractually obligated to protect your information and use it only for those purposes.

Legal Requirements and Safety

We may disclose personal information when required by law or when we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with legal obligations, enforce agreements, investigate or defend against claims, or protect the rights, safety, or property of The Precedent, our users, or the public.

Business Transfers

If The Precedent is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing due diligence, reorganization, bankruptcy, receivership, sale of company assets, or transition of service to another provider, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. In such cases, we will ensure the successor entity is bound to respect the personal data in a manner consistent with this Privacy Policy unless otherwise required by law.

With Your Consent

In situations where you explicitly consent to or request that we share information with a third party, we will do so.

Aggregated or De-Identified Data

We may share aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you.

Aside from the purposes above, we do not disclose your personal information to any third parties.

Data Storage and International Transfer

The Precedent is operated from and hosted in the United States. All personal information we collect is currently stored and processed on servers located in the U.S. By using the service, you consent to this transfer and processing.

Data Security

We take reasonable and appropriate measures to secure your personal information, including encryption and access controls. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Data Retention

We retain personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.

Children’s Privacy

The Precedent’s services are not intended for children or minors under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
